Recognizing the steadfast dedication and commitment of Rose "Rosie the Crossing Guard" Hiestand.
Body
WHEREAS, Rosie Hiestand was the longest serving crossing guard in Madison history, serving the community at Crestwood Elementary School for 47 years from 1964 until her retirement in June; and,

WHEREAS dressed in an orange vest and armed with a stop sign and a smile, Rosie crossed more than 10,000 Crestwood students during her career and in 8,500 days of work missed fewer than 12 days due to illness; and,

WHEREAS, Rosie's smile and her lawn chair were fixtures on Old Sauk Road no matter the weather as she greeted thousands of commuters daily; and,

WHEREAS, Rosie served as an integral part, and was and always will be a cherished member of the Crestwood community; and,

WHEREAS, Rosie offered a comforting reassurance, every school day, to several generations of children, letting them know, with her warmth, kindness, and smile that they were being carefully watched and that they were safe. Her presence also provided peace of mind for so many parents, who knew that on Rosie's watch, those most precious to them were in very good hands; and,

WHEREAS, Rose "Rosie the Crossing Guard" Hiestand passed away on July 16, 2011 at home at age 83;
