Accessible Housing Resolution
Body
WHEREAS, the City of Madison has an interest in providing housing options to people with disabilities that are fully accessible, inclusionary, and affordable; and

WHEREAS, the Administration on Aging projects the number of people age 65 and older is expected to increase 80% by 2030, representing 19.3% of the overall U.S. population; and

WHEREAS, the University of Florida Warrington College of Business published a report which projects the number of people with a long-lasting condition that substantially limits one or more physical activity is expected to increase by 38% by 2030, representing 10.5% of the overall U.S. population; and

WHEREAS, the University of Florida Warrington College of Business published a report which projects the number of people with a condition lasting six months or more which creates activity limitations is expected to increase by 41% by 2030, representing 4% of the population; and

WHEREAS, the City of Madison’s Commission on People with Disabilities has determined that 10% of all housing needs to be fully accessible in order to meet the growing needs of our population; and

WHEREAS, the Commission has determined that changes to building codes are needed to ensure that housing stock keeps pace with the needs, and that such changes are more appropriate at the State or Federal levels rather than a local municipality.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Common Council of the City of Madison requests and encourages the state legislature to modify state building codes with a goal of making 10% of all state housing units fully accessible by 2025; and
