Proclaiming Thursday, October 21, 2010 at "Lights on Afterschool" in Madison.
Body
WHEREAS, more than 70% of Madison’s parents with school age children work out of the home, after school programs provide a vital safety net for families and the community; and,
WHEREAS, more than 4,000 elementary and middle school age children attend an after school program offered through the Madison Metropolitan School District, YMCA of Dane County, Wisconsin Youth Company, Boys & Girls Clubs, each of the City’s Neighborhood community centers, child care centers, churches and family child care homes throughout Madison; and,
WHEREAS, after school programs provide employment for more than 400 residents to care for and provide enriching experiences for children; and,
WHEREAS, high quality after school programs provide children an opportunity to learn valuable life skills, socialize with friends, explore their talents and develop interests in a safe, caring environment; and,
WHEREAS, high quality after school programs support and enhance the academic achievement and school success of children; and,
WHEREAS, young people need consistent, healthy adult encouragement, and support in every aspect of their lives: at home, in school and during non-school hours; and,
WHEREAS, Lights on Afterschool is a national day of recognition for the important role after school program play in the well-being of our children and the quality of life in our community; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor of the City of Madison, Wisconsin, does hereby proclaim October 21, 2010, as “Lights on Afterschool" in Madison and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Madison recognize that after school programs should be commended for the many positive contributions they make to improve the quality of life in Madison and efforts to assure the future success of our children and the continued economic growth of our City, and
