Designating September 14, 2010, as "Protect Your Groundwater Day" in the City of Madison and encouraging citizen awareness of groundwater quantity and quality.
Body
WHEREAS, 95 percent of all available freshwater worldwide comes from underground aquifers and 100 percent of Madison's water comes from such aquifers; and
WHEREAS, it is important to protect aquifers to protect the public water supply; and
WHEREAS, Madison is fortunate to have an abundant supply of high quality water; and
WHEREAS, being a good steward of this valuable asset just makes sense; and
WHEREAS, groundwater protection involves keeping it safe from contamination and using it wisely by not wasting it. Human activities can cause contamination by improper use or disposal of hazardous substances such as insecticides, pesticides, and chemicals, or by not properly protecting abandoned private wells; and
WHEREAS, everyone can use good water conservation measures in their homes by installing water-saving fixtures and modifying their behaviors to avoid wasting this valuable resource; and
WHEREAS, the City of Madison and the Madison Water Utility recognize that there has been substantial citizen support for our drinking water in the past and encourage future support for groundwater protection and water conservation; and
WHEREAS, the National Groundwater Association and others recognize September 14 as "Protect Your Groundwater Day";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and the Common Council hereby proclaim September 14, 2010, as "Protect Your Groundwater Day" and encourage citizen participation in maintaining groundwater quality and quantity.
