Authorizing the Mayor, City Clerk and Chief of Police to accept a Target & BLUE Law Enforcement Grant Program award from the Target Foundation in the amount of up to $1,000 and to utilize these funds to create and distribute an Internet safety DVD to better educate the public about social networking, text messaging and other cellular activities to prevent cyber crimes.

Body
WHEREAS, the rapid growth of Internet technology and electronic social interactions contains public safety concerns; and,

WHEREAS, the public's desire for information regarding the use of social networks, text messaging and identify theft has also been growing rapidly and,

WHEREAS, the Madison Police Technology Committee has developed an Internet safety curriculum focusing on social networking, text messaging and other cellular activities to prevent cyber crimes (cyber stalking, cyber bullying and predatory Internet solicitations); and,

WHEREAS, Police Department public presentations and interactive classes to parents groups, conventions, youth, churches, schools and universities have been very successful, but have not been able to keep up with high demand; and,

WHEREAS, these funds will be used to create DVDs using this curriculum, which can then be distributed to interested groups and organizations, thus better disseminating information about Internet safety.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Madison, through the Police Department, is authorized to apply for and accept an award from the Target Foundation for up to $1,000.00.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that these funds will be used to create, duplicate and distribute Internet safety DVDs.

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Police Department is authorized to establish and/or maintain accounts as required for the administration of the grant funds.
