Supporting the city of Madison's application for Google Fiber for Communities.
 
Body
WHEREAS, Google has announced plans to build and test ultra-high speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the country; and
 
WHEREAS, Google has published a request for information from interested communities, responses to which are due on March 26, 2010; and
 
WHEREAS, Madison is superbly positioned to make an aggressive application for this program due to its strong high-tech business community, the quality of the infrastructure, a tech-savvy population, the presence of a Google office here, and many community organizations interested in partnering with the city; and
 
WHEREAS, being a trial location for Google could mean millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs in Madison; and
 
WHEREAS, public interest in this program has been strong throughout our community;
 
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council support the City of Madison's application to the Google Fiber, and direct the IT Director to work with city agencies and with interested community organizations in order to prepare a response by March 26, 2010.
