A RESOLUTION congratulating the fourth- and fifth-grade students at Glendale Elementary School for creating “Dreams of Our Future,” a collection of original illustrated books based on their hopes for the world and commending the many people who collaborated to make the project a reality.
Body
WHEREAS, the James Watrous Gallery held an exhibition titled “The Fine Art of Children’s Book Illustration,” presenting the work of several of Wisconsin’s most accomplished authors/illustrators of children’s picture books ; and

WHEREAS, artist Pat Dillon conceived of and coordinated a collaboration between the Watrous Gallery, the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, the Overture Center, illustrators of books for children and the Madison Metropolitan School District; and

WHEREAS, Glendale Elementary School, through the dedication and leadership of Principal Mickey Buhl, Victoria Vetter and Glendale staff, have risen to a top-level of achievement among elementary students throughout the city; and

WHEREAS, six fourth- and fifth-grade classes from Glendale Elementary School participated in the project, each class coming up with a word to describe their future hopes for the world; and

WHEREAS, the six words chosen were: clean, colorful, fun, animals, dreams and magical; and

WHEREAS, each word served as the basis for a children’s book describing the students’ collective hope for the future; and

WHEREAS, the students’ work was judged by a panel of professionals in the art world and four images from each class were chosen to hang in the Overture Center’s Playhouse Gallery for two months in 2009; and

WHEREAS, the student artists from Glendale Elementary School read and shared images from their self-created books during a program held in the Rotunda of the Overture Center for the Arts; and

WHEREAS, the American Girl’s corporate headquarters has offered to exhibit the “Dreams of Our Future” project at its Rotating...
