Authorizing the expenditure of $5,000 from Traffic Engineering for Safe Routes to School grants to Madison Metropolitan School District schools.

Body
WHEREAS, the Common Council adopted the Mayor’s Platinum Bicycling Committee’s report Making Madison the Best Place in the Country to Bicycle in April 2008; and

WHEREAS, one of the high priority recommendations in that report is to Create a Safe Routes to School Plan for Madison; and

WHEREAS, city staff have been working with the Madison Metropolitan School District, the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, and other community groups to develop a Safe Routes to School Plan for Madison’s schools; and

WHEREAS, city staff have worked with MMSD staff and elementary school principals to determine viable low cost pilot Safe Routes to School projects; and

WHEREAS, projects at four MMSD elementary schools have been selected for funding at $1,250 each; and

WHEREAS, funds are available for this purpose in Traffic Engineering’s budget;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that these funds in the amount of $1,250 be allocated to each of the following schools for their Safe Routes to School pilot projects
· Kennedy Elementary School to identify safe biking routes to the school, create a safe biking curriculum, and to procure used bikes, helmets, locks, and a bike pump and tool kit to be used in the safe biking classes,
· Lake View Elementary School to jump start a walking school bus program using staff (Special Education Assistant) to provide the support for the walking school bus program,
· Leopold Elementary School to provide teaching and incentive program materials to get the initiative started along with some material purchases of helmets and locks,
· Marquette Elementary School for printed materials to promote a WOW (Walk/Wheel on Wednesdays) campaign, safety vests for adult volunt...
