Recognizing October as Italian-American Heritage Month and October 12, 2009 as Christopher Columbus Day.
Body
WHEREAS, for many years October has been celebrated as Italian-American Heritage Month in many parts of the United States; and,

WHEREAS, for many years October 12 was recognized as Christopher Columbus Day with Monday October 12 being the observed holiday in 2009; and,

WHEREAS, Italian-American Heritage Month is one of deep pride for more than 20 million Americans claiming Italian heritage in America; and,

WHEREAS, from the very beginning of our country, the sons and daughters of Italy have brought honor to themselves and have enriched our national life. In the beauty of Washington, DC Italian immigrants spent more than 10 years carving the great seated figure in the Lincoln Memorial, adorned the National Cathedral with statues, graced the dome and corridors of the Capitol Building with art and who built the State Capitol Building in Madison plus other Madison Landmarks; and,

WHEREAS, for generation after generation, the success of our country has drawn heavily from the industry and resourcefulness of Italian Americans and their families; and,

WHEREAS, the millions of Italians who came to the United States brought with them a distinct strength of character, faith in God, devotion to family and love of life ; and,

WHEREAS, Madison is the home of the Italian Workmen’s Club (est. 1912) and Italian-American Women’s Club (est. 1934) two of the longest continuously active Italian American Clubs in the United States,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Madison Common Council recognizes October as Italian-American Heritage Month in the City of Madison, and Monday October 12, 2009 as Christopher Columbus Day and commends Italian Americans for the contributions they have made to the City of Madison, and,

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution is presented to the Italian Workmen’s C...
