Title
Approving the Fire Department to work with SafeKids of Dane County on a fund raising campaign for the Safety Town Program.
Body
The Safety Town program was piloted by the City of Madison Fire Department in 2004. It has since increased enrollment and become a highly-regarded summer offering for children entering kindergarten in partnership with Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR), with six sessions running in June and July of 2009.
To date, the Safety Town program has not gained a permanent place in our program offerings. The equipment stored in a trailer at Firehouse #7 on McKenna Blvd. must be set up at a location of MSCR's choosing.
Leadership has now been assumed by the Madison Fire Department in collaboration with SafeKids of Dane County. We are committed to strengthening curriculum based on injury data and best practice.
There are regular waiting lists for enrollment. The Safety Town model has applications that could easily become the basis for year-round programming, expanded to offerings for a broader age range. The current model has worked for young children. However, to expand the program to include more children and the adult population (such as seniors) requires a different model.
The vision of Safety Town is to create a permanent facility, funded in large part by private donations.
The City of Madison Fire Department, with the agreement of SafeKids, wishes to establish a separate donation fund for this purpose.
Budget for this program will be in SO99. Revenue will be deposited in SO99-78540.
