Amending the Police Department 2009 Operating Budget to reallocate funds originally intended to utilize MATC for the 2009 Preservice Academy for remodeling and equipping an alternate location for the Academy.
Body
WHEREAS, the 2009 Police Department Operating Budget includes funding of $48,500 to utilize classroom and office space at the Madison Area Technical College (MATC), as well as space for tactics training and the in-door shooting range; and,

WHEREAS, the Madison Police Department (MPD), Economic Development Division and Mayor’s Office have been working to continue the fifteen-year partnership with MATC for training space; and,

WHEREAS, the City of Madison was recently notified by MATC that some or all of the space previously utilized by MPD for training purposes may be unavailable for the 2009 Preservice Academy class beginning in May, 2009; and,

WHEREAS, in order to ensure that a suitable location is available in time for the start of the Preservice Academy in May, 2009 alternative space needs to be secured and available; and

WHEREAS, in December, 2008, the MPD secured an expanded rental facility at Marsh Court for the storage of vehicular evidence; and,

WHEREAS, this facility includes space that can be remodeled to accommodate a small Preservice Academy of the size anticipated in 2009, as well as office space for training staff; and,

WHEREAS, once remodeled, this space could be used on an ongoing basis for offices and/or future training; and,

WHEREAS, funds would also be needed to purchase furnishings and equipment previously provided by MATC, as well as security for the remainder of the building; and,

WHEREAS, funds would be maintained in the facility rental account to provide for the utilization of the Dane County Range for the development of shooting skills; and,
