Authorizing the Office of Community Services to enter into purchase of service contracts utilizing City of Madison funds allocated in the 2008 City of Madison budget for the continuation of successful Weed and Seed programs.
Body
WHEREAS, Madison has neighborhoods where crime rates and the number of residents living in poverty are higher than the citywide average and those same neighborhoods lack comprehensive plans and resources to address their special issues; and

WHEREAS, in 2000 City officials and staff determined that the three neighborhoods in greatest need of additional resources were the Allied Drive, Broadway lake Point and South Madison neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, in 2000 staff from the Office of Community Services and Madison Police Department conducted forums with residents of the three neighborhoods to gather input and feedback on a plan for additional resources; and

WHEREAS, in 2000 the City of Madison applied for and was awarded Official Recognition as a Weed and Seed site by the United States Department of Justice Executive Office for Weed and Seed; and

WHREAS the City of Madison is currently implementing the fifth and final year of the Federal Weed and Seed grant and the Official Recognition strategy developed in 2000 and updated in the spring of 2007; and

WEHREAS on August 3, 2007 the United States Department of Justice awarded funding to the City of Madison a Year 5 Weed and Seed grant for the period of October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008 in the amount of $200,000; and

WHEREAS this is the last Weed and Seed grant award that will be received to address the five-year strategy which began implementation in 2002; and
