Commending the Madison City Clerk's Office.

WHEREAS,       City Clerk staff helped over a thousand voters a day cast their ballots in the many days and weeks leading up to Election Day, for a total of 18,000 absentee voters in the Clerk's Office; and
 
WHEREAS,       staff processed thousands more absentee ballots by mail, issuing more than 32,000 absentee ballots before Election Day; and
 
WHEREAS,       the City Clerk's Office processed 62,711 voter registrations this year - 37,766 since the April election, and 21,158 since October 1; and
 
WHEREAS,       staff put in countless hours beyond their normal workload and extended hours for early voting - opening for early voters on a Sunday for the first time ever; and
 
WHEREAS,      the City Clerk filled all 1850 poll worker shifts and thoroughly trained each worker; and
 
WHEREAS,       staff made the necessary preparations and support available to all 80 of Madison's polling places on Election Day; and
 
WHEREAS,      all City Clerk staff executed the day-to-day work necessary to fill the promise of democracy and continue their commitment to accurate, efficient elections in the City of Madison;
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,  that Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and the Madison Common Council commend the outstanding work of the Madison City Clerk and all staff to achieve a smooth 2008 general election.
