Authorizing the Mayor and the Chief of Police to accept donated funds for the implementation of traffic safety projects.
Body
WHEREAS, traffic safety vests are needed to increase visibility in poor weather conditions and for those whose activities occur near roadways where traffic speeds may exceed 25 mph; and,

WHEREAS, all commissioned officers, parking enforcement officers and crossing guards may be required to work in situations which require the use of a traffic safety vest; and,

WHEREAS, the Federal Highway Administration has ruled that, effective November 24, 2008, police personnel are required to wear an ANSI Level II vest or higher when performing duties that may place them in the highway right-of-way; and,

WHEREAS, the majority of current safety vests utilized by police personnel are ANSI Level I vests, which do not meet this minimum criterion; and,

WHEREAS, AAA of Wisconsin offers grants for traffic related special events, programs or initiatives; and,

WHEREAS, the project to provide traffic vests for all police personnel required to obtain ANSI Level II vests by the November 2008 date meets the guidelines for AAA grants; and,

WHEREAS, the Madison Police Department periodically has specific traffic related projects or initiatives that may qualify for these AAA grants.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor, City Clerk, and Chief of Police are authorized to accept ongoing donations, and sign the appropriate documents, in support of Traffic Safety projects.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that these funds be used for supplies, equipment, or training expenses required for the implementation of specific initiatives to address traffic safety issues.
