Title
Congratulating the City of Madison Fire Department on 100 years of service as a career Fire Department.
Body
WHEREAS, The City of Madison Fire Department became a fully paid career department on July 1, 1908. Prior to the establishment of a career department, the City had volunteer coverage. It took 70 years of evolving from numerous volunteer crews and reorganizations to bring about the birth of a career department.

WHEREAS, Fire Chief Amesqua commissioned a commemorative lapel pin which is fashioned after the insignia worn by firefighters when the Department began to provide full time service to our City. The Department is proud of its heritage and volunteer origins. It is also important to recognize the individuals who volunteered to fill the needs of our City and for the firefighters who have served throughout our long history.

WHEREAS, This year the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the International Association of Fire Fighters joined together to mark Fire/EMS Safety, Health and Survival week. As part of this event, Local Fire Fighters 311 President Joe Conway and Chief Amesqua asked all personnel to re-commit to a culture of health and safety.

WHEREAS, Firefighting continues to be a dangerous profession. The establishment of a career department 100 years ago was a huge step toward managing the danger and providing the City with better equipped and trained firefighters. A century as a career department has placed the emphasis on prevention thorough education, engineering and enforcement for the safety of both our personnel and the community we serve.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council and Mayor recognize and extends their congratulations to the Fire Department on its century of career service to our community;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the future of the Fire Department will continue to evolve in the next century with the Department continuing its tradition...
