The proceeds of this grant will be accounted for in a segregated fund. Funds will be used for computer equipment, software, supplies, equipment, training, and a 1.0 FTE LTE position for about one year. There is no match requirement. No City funds have been budgeted to continue this position after the grant ends.

WHEREAS, in 2007 the Madison Police Department (MPD) developed a proposal to implement a Gang and Violent Crime Intervention Project designed to analyze a variety of data in order to address impacts and emerging trends in relation to gang activities and violent crime; and,

WHEREAS, in compliance with grant guidelines the MPD proposal included collaborative efforts with other law enforcement agencies; and,

WHEREAS, the Gang and Violent Crime Intervention Project proposal included utilization of the current regional collaboration between the MPD and seventeen other regional law enforcement agencies and municipal courts; and,

WHEREAS, Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin was successful in her efforts to secure funding for this proposal; and,

WHEREAS, the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs has notified the Madison Police Department that these funds have been awarded as an FY08 Congressionally Mandated Edward Byrne Memorial Award; and,

WHEREAS, this grant provides funding to purchase the hardware and software needed to collect information, to develop and maintain the essential database, and to analyze and map information obtained; and,
