Title

Authorizing the increase of Police Department fleet vehicles by one.

Body

WHEREAS, in 2008 the Madison Police Department (MPD) was allocated funding to purchase and equip marked and unmarked squad cars; and,

WHEREAS, in the course of purchasing equipment for these vehicles a one-time cost saving opportunity arose that allowed for the acquisition of radio/data communications equipment at a substantially reduced price; and,

WHEREAS, additional savings were obtained through the use of grant funded in-car video equipment; and,

WHEREAS, as a result of these savings and additional equipment provided through grants and other revenue, funding is available for the purchase and equipping of one additional police vehicle; and,

WHEREAS, the Police Fleet Manager has identified a significant shortage of available police vehicles during hours of peak demand; and,

WHEREAS, the Police Fleet Manager has indicated that with the completed transition to five separate District Community Policing Teams (CPT) there is specifically an immediate critical need for an additional squad car for CPT use.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Police Department fleet be increased by one.
