Recognizing and thanking Hickory Hurie for his professional and personal dedication to the City of Madison on the occasion of his retirement.
Body
WHEREAS, Hickory Hurie is retiring on May 16, 2008 after 30 years of dedicated service to the City of Madison; and

WHEREAS, Hickory has been an invaluable member of the City team since 1978 when he accepted a position in the Mayor's Office under Paul Soglin as Committee Coordinator. He served one year with the City’s Department of Administration as a Program Evaluator of the CDBG Program and began leading the CDBG Program in 1980; and

WHEREAS, Hickory’s extensive knowledge of Community Development, especially Housing and Economic Development, has guided the development of healthy urban neighborhoods throughout Madison; and

WHEREAS, Hickory’s leadership and open managerial style have developed partnerships with not-for-profit agencies and other innovative partnerships that have resulted in the redevelopment of Willy Street, the North side and in successful programs such as the business loan program, the homebuyers' downpayment program, and the Affordable Housing Trust Fund; and

WHEREAS, through his vision, creativity, and hard work, Hickory has enhanced the health and quality of services to low- and moderate-income residents; and

WHEREAS, through his efforts to expand resources and investment practices, Hickory has developed thriving neighborhoods and a solid long-term infrastructure for the CDBG program; and

WHEREAS, under Hickory's leadership, the City has become a national leader in Community Development and is frequently cited for its Best Practices; and

WHEREAS, his rich background has made him an invaluable resource and advisor to Madison mayors and the City Council in developing and watching over Madison's community development investments; and
