Title
Recognizing the contributions of Madison City Channel to the community, requesting development of a plan to identify alternative funding options for Madison City Channel and calling on the State Legislature to pass legislation protecting existing funding for Madison City Channel.
Body
WHEREAS, Madison City Channel, the award-winning television station which enables openness and accessibility in local government, has served Madison residents since 1974; and
 
WHEREAS, this transparency in government is no longer a luxury, but is, in the 21st century, a necessity; and
 
WHEREAS, the "Video Competition Act" (Act 42) passed by the Wisconsin Legislature and signed by Governor Doyle threatens the existence of stations such as Madison City Channel by eliminating the "Access Fee" funding mechanism after 2010;
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and the Common Council of the City of Madison recognize the contributions and importance of Madison City Channel to the community.
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mayor's Office, in consultation with members of the Common Council of the City of Madison, will prepare a plan identifying alternative funding options for Madison City Channel beyond 2010.
 
BE FINALLY RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Madison will endeavor to convince State legislators to pass legislation which protects existing funding mechanisms, thereby preserving this vital link between citizens and their government.
