SUBSTITUTE - Honoring the work and dedication of City of Madison employees involved in fighting the record snowfall this year.
Body

WHEREAS, the City of Madison has set an all-time record for snow accumulation in a single season, with a snowfall this season of 87.5 inches, surpassing the record of 76.6 inches set in 1978-79; and
WHEREAS, snow has fallen in Madison more than half the days since December 1st (46 out of 88 days), requiring City workers to spend countless hours, including numerous weekends and evenings away from their families this winter; and
WHEREAS, City workers have tackled the challenge of this year's difficult weather with great dedication, spending long hours out in the cold and in physically demanding conditions to get the job done; and
WHEREAS, response to the winter weather has been a citywide effort, relying upon employees from virtually every agency to ensure that our residents can travel safely in spite of this winter's extreme conditions; and
WHEREAS, employees from Streets, Parks, Parks Forestry, Parks Construction, Mall Concourse, Engineering, Fleet Services, Parking Enforcement, Madison Metro, Water Utility, Building Inspection, and Parking Utility deserve special recognition for their extraordinary efforts to keep our city running smoothly in bad weather; and
WHEREAS, it's only February; and
WHEREAS, the annual basketball tournament snowstorm in March is yet to come;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council express their appreciation for the extraordinary work and dedication of all the workers throughout City government who have helped keep Madison safe and moving through the record-breaking snows this winter.
