Proclaiming September 24 - 29, 2006 as "Parental Stress Awareness Week" in the City of Madison.
Body
WHEREAS, parental stress is a real issue with real consequences and it affects every parent in our community; and
WHEREAS, parental stress can be caused by a variety of factors, but commonly by poverty, isolation, trauma, domestic violence or a history of child abuse or neglect; and
WHEREAS, some parental stress can lead to child abuse and neglect; and
WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect can have serious, long-lasting, negative effects on the growth of children and the health of families, communities and society; and
WHEREAS, people can heal from negative experiences with appropriate support and treatment; and
WHEREAS, people deserve the opportunity to change failures, struggles and challenges into a growth experience; and
WHEREAS, people have responsibility for themselves, their families and their community; and
WHEREAS, many forms of parental stress can be alleviated by support, information and education; and
WHEREAS, supporting families who are dealing with parental stress can stop the cycle of child abuse and violence.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor of the City of Madison, Wisconsin does hereby proclaim September 24 - 29, 2006 as
PARENTAL STRESS AWARENESS WEEK
in the City of Madison and calls upon the residents of Madison to take an active interest in the issue of parental stress.
