Title: Authorizing the Mayor and Chief of Police to accept two (2) traffic safety grants totaling $6,200 from the Safe Community Coalition of Madison and Dane County for the following activities in 2006: conduct pedestrian safety enforcement activities in selected areas with high number of older adult pedestrians (downtown Madison and in the vicinity of Hilldale Mall) and to provide educational activities at specific events for the motorcycling community in conjunction with the Middleton Police Department and the Dane County Sheriff Office.

Body
WHEREAS, the Safe Community Coalition (SCC) has received monies from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to implement a pedestrian safety initiative for older adults and was awarded a one-of-its kind grant to develop best practices to reduce impaired motorcycling and the Madison Police Department is working collaboratively with the SCC; and,

WHEREAS, the SCC has offered a total of $6,200 specifically to contribute to decreasing the number of deaths and/or injuries due to crashes, enable safer conditions for older adult pedestrians and reduce the number of impaired motorcyclists on City Of Madison roadways by deploying officers for enhanced enforcement and educational efforts; and,

WHEREAS, a maximum of $4,000 will be spent on overtime for education and enforcement to enhance pedestrian safety for older adults in the downtown area and in the vicinity of Hilldale Mall; and,

WHEREAS, a maximum of $2,200 will be spent on overtime to conduct public education activities for the motorcycling community at two Bike Nights events and the weekend Thunder Run activities; and,

WHEREAS, the SCC has provided this funding to the City of Madison; and,

WHEREAS, the funds enable the Police Department's Traffic and Support Section to coordinate additional traffic enforce...
