On December 2, 2005 the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) awarded the East Washington Avenue Segment 1 Project it's highest-order and most prestigious recognition of quality, the "Excellence in Concrete Pavement " award. In addition, the ACPA also named the East Washington Avenue Project as a finalist in the Traffic Management Category.

The General Contractor for the project was James Peterson and Sons Construction of Medford Wisconsin. Honored for their excellent work on the project was "Trierweiler Construction Company (subcontractor, concrete paving), The City of Madison, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Southwest Region Office, HNTB Corporation (design consultant) and Ayres Associates (the construction engineer).

The "Excellence in Concrete Pavement" award cites projects for quality, efficiency, smoothness, reduced costs and for minimizing user delays. The award was selected from more than 60 entries by a panel of industry experts and judges.

The East Washington Avenue Segment 1 Project runs from Blair Street to Dickinson Street and was completed in the spring of 2005. Construction included a new concrete pavement, street lighting, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, street lighting, traffic signals and landscaping. The construction was made more challenging by the near record rainfall that occurred in the spring of 2004.

The City of Madison is honored to accept the awards provided by the American Concrete Pavement Association. The hard work and dedication provided by all the Contractors, Consultants, Wisconsin Department of Transportation Staff and City of Madison Staff has made the project a success.
