Recognizing and commending the neighborhood organizers of the Annual Simpson Street Neighborhood/Finest Families Reunion.
Body
WHEREAS, Simpson Street, was named for land owner Mr. Homer V. Simpson (1902-1965) and was changed to Lake Point Drive in the late 1990s; and;
WHEREAS, the first Simpson Street Neighborhood and Finest Families Reunion was held on Saturday, August 14, 2010 in Waunona Park and has been held August 13, 2011; August 18, 2012; August 17, 2013 and August 23, 2014; and,
WHEREAS, the Annual Simpson Street Neighborhood and Finest Families Reunions celebrate the bonds forged in the once troubled neighborhood and brings friends and family from Chicago, Illinois; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Houston, Texas; Waterloo, Iowa; New York City, New York; Los Angeles, California; Miami, Florida; Washington, DC and New Jersey; and,
WHEREAS, the stigma that was once the city's most troubled neighborhood, with escalating drug activity, police calls and neglected housing has been transformed and revitalized by the hard work of the Mothers of Simpson Street and fathers, sons and daughters who organized and marched against the shootings and drug activity and who were supported by nearby homeowners/renters along Simpson Street/ Waunona Way who had a stake in the success of the neighborhood; and,
WHEREAS, residents always felt that the neighborhood reminded them of communities that they had moved from, that it fostered a sense of stability and created a "it takes a village to raise a child" mentality,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Madison Common Council recognize and commend the organizers of the Annual Simpson Street Neighborhood and Finest Families Reunion for their hard work dedication, loyalty and commitment to their neighborhood.
