Honoring Charles D. Rosa and directing City Employees to return to the correct pronunciation of Rosa Road.
Body
WHEREAS, Charles D. Rosa (1870-1959) was an important person in the history of the City of Madison and the State of Wisconsin; and,
WHEREAS, among Rosa's accomplishments were that he was the salutatorian of the Beloit College class of 1898; he was the first municipal judge of the City of Beloit; he served in the Wisconsin Assembly from 1917-18; he was an unsuccessful candidate for the United States Senate against John Blaine as a progressive Republican in the 1926 primary; he was a prominent member of the Wisconsin Tax Appeals Commission from 1921-1937; he was the co-author of the official State Song reflected in sec. 1.10, Wisconsin Statutes; and he was the recipient of the Beloit College Distinguished Service Citation in 1958 on the 60th anniversary of his graduation; and,
WHEREAS, the correct pronunciation of the family name is "Rozay," which was confirmed by Susan Rosa of Madison, John Rosa of Monroe, Fredric Rosa of Lakewood, Colorado, and Steve Rosa of Palm Desert, California, all of whom are relatives of Charles D. Rosa; and,
WHEREAS, those growing up near Rosa Road on Madison's west side during the 1960's and 1970's knew the pronunciation of the road as "Rozay" Road; and
WHEREAS, the incorrect pronunciation of the Rosa Road as "Rosuh" Road has become common; and,
WHEREAS, Madison Metro Transit intends to introduce the correct pronunciation of Rosa Road on its bus system later this year,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Madison Common Council expresses its appreciation for the long and distinguished career of Charles D. Rosa, and,
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that all City employees are directed to use the correct pronunciation of Rosa ("Rozay") when referring to Rosa Road.
