Approving a landmark nomination of the property located at 222 E Olin Avenue as the Wonder Bar (District 14).
Body
WHEREAS, a landmark nomination of the property located at 222 E Olin Avenue, City of Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin has been duly filed for review by the Landmarks Commission and approval by the Common Council, as provided for in Section 41.07 of Madison General Ordinances; and
WHEREAS, Chapter 62, Wisconsin Statutes requires that the City must hold a public hearing to designate a landmark, which the City fulfills with public hearings at the Landmarks Commission and Common Council.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Wonder Bar is significant for its association with the Prohibition Era and the criminal organizations that establishes outposts on the outskirts of cities for illegal gambling and other criminal activity, in this instance by the Touhy family, as part of Madison’s social history, and that said landmark nomination is hereby approved by the Madison Common Council; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk of the City of Madison is hereby authorized to record the designation with the Dane County Register of Deeds; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk shall notify the Building Inspector and the City Assessor of this landmark designation; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that following adoption of this resolution, the Landmarks Commission shall affix a plaque identifying the property as a landmark to the landmark or landmark site consistent with the requirements in Section 41.07(8), Madison General Ordinances.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that Madison is the site of long-term human habitation, and is located on Indigenous land, which is the Ho-Chunk Nation ancestral homeland.
