Commending Sally Hughes, Public Works General Supervisor, upon her retirement, for her dedicated service to the City of Madison.

Body

WHEREAS Sally Hughes retires from employment with the City of Madison Streets Division on April 7, 2006, completing over 29 years of dedicated service to the City of Madison. Sally began her career with the Police Department in 1977 and transferred to the Street Division in 1981 as the Operations Clerk. 

 

WHEREAS Sally Hughes was the first female Public Works Foreperson in the history of the Street Division and the first female Streets General Supervisor of the Street Division and the first female Public Works General Supervisor of the Street Division.  Since being one of the first female employees holding a non-traditional job, Ms. Hughes gave many informative talks to Madison Metropolitan School District students expressing the possibilities that abound for females to hold non-traditional jobs.

 

WHEREAS Sally Hughes was one of the first EAP facilitators for the City of Madison. 

 

WHEREAS Ms. Hughes has been a skilled worker, foreperson and supervisor whose dedication, knowledge, fair-mindedness and sense of humor will be sorely missed not only by the Street Division but also by the City of Madison.

 

AND, WHEREAS Ms. Hughes was instrumental in the development and implementation of many Street Division service initiatives beginning with being the foreperson in charge of curbside recycling when it began in 1991.  Ms. Hughes was instrumental in the planning and implementation of the single stream automated recycling program, which began in 2005.

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and the Common Council express its gratitude and appreciation to Sally Hughes for her 29 years of outstanding service to the City of Madison and its citizens, and wishes her a healthy and prosperous retirement.
