Title

McKenna Blvd and Elver Park Flood Mitigation

Body

Major flash flooding has occurred  on the west side in the past years and in particular on the west side at McKenna Blvd at Elver Park.  The existing storm sewer that currently drains the lands north of McKenna Blvd cannot handle the amounts of water and run off from these types of flooding.  If the flooding event is large enough, the channel north of McKenna Blvd floods, which then floods out Greentree Landfill and also floods houses that back up to the channel.  Impacts to the landfill include flooding of the methane vacuum venting, and flooding of the paths and bridges with up to 2 feet of water.  McKenna Blvd is experiencing flooding of over 1.5ft of water which has caused  cars to stall and causes hazard to motorists.  Due to the proximity of the Police and Fire stations, and since McKenna Blvd is a major access road,  the flooding also causes issues for emergency response.

Engineering is working on the stormwater modeling and looking into different design options and iterations including modifications to the storm sewer with additional storm sewer piping under McKenna Blvd;  modifications to McKenna Blvd to allow water to more easily overtop the street to get into the pond located in Elver Park; and modifications to the Elver Park parking lot and access drive to allow any water that overtops the roadway to quickly drain to the ponds to mitigate standing water in the street.
