Title
To declare the week of April 26, 2009 through May 1, 2009, "ARBOR WEEK 2009" and to commemorate the City of Madison's 20th anniversary as a Tree City USA.
Body
Preamble

Madison has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation for 20 consecutive years and received a Growth Award for 8 years, and desires to continue its tree planting ways.  The Forestry Section of the Parks Division for the City of Madison has been fortunate in receiving an anonymous donation to help fund tree plantings for 2009 in celebration of Arbor Week.

People throughout Wisconsin and across the country celebrate Arbor Day by paying special attention to the wonderful treasure that trees represent, and by dedicating themselves to the continued health of our urban forest that includes trees located along the street, boulevards, private landscapes, parks, greenways and conservation areas.

Trees can reduce the erosion of topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife.

The continued planting and maintenance of trees in our city shall provide those same benefits for future citizens of Madison.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Mayor of the City of Madison, Wisconsin, does hereby proclaim April 26th thru May 1st as Arbor Week 2009 in the City of Madison, and all citizens are urged to support the efforts to protect our trees and woodlands and to support our City's urban forestry program.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all citizens are encouraged to observe Arbor Week by planting trees and participating in programs that the sponsors of Arbor Week may provide.
