The Fire Department currently uses fire engines and ladders to transport employees to non-emergency events (e.g., training, medical exams and meetings) about once per week. This resolution authorizes Fleet Service to provide the Fire Department with a used non-emergency vehicle for this purpose. Such a vehicle would normally be sold at auction for about $2,500. The used vehicle would cost substantially less to operate than the large emergency vehicles and would also allow emergency vehicles to be available in their response territory. The Fleet Service Superintendent anticipates a small savings to the City as a result of this action.

Madison Fire Department has a day-to-day need to transport personnel around the City of Madison for many different reasons other than emergency calls. As an example, MFD personnel need transportation to various training sessions. MFD personnel are required to attend these trainings in order to maintain their EMT licenses, etc. At times, it is only one individual that may need specific training and therefore not necessary for the entire crew to attend. In this instance, this individual would need transportation to this training.

Madison Fire Department is proposing increasing it's fleet of vehicles by one. Madison Fire has discussed this matter with Fleet Services' Manager Bill Vanden Brook. He has suggested using one of the City's fleet cars or SUV's that are out of service and eventually going to auction. For example a City of Madison police vehicle that will no longer be put in service within their department and be sent to auction can instead be used for other city uses.

It is expensive to operate front line fire engines, ladders, ambulances and other special duty vehicles. Therefore, using one of the city's fleet cars of suvs that are out of service for these day-to-day transports would reflect a savings in operations and ma...
