Declaring November 11-17, 2007 as Voter Registration Week in the City of Madison.
Body
WHEREAS, the right to vote in fair, accessible, and open elections is one of our most fundamental rights; and
 
WHEREAS, voter registration is a crucial part of our electoral process; and
 
WHEREAS, over 42,000 Madison residents registered to vote this past year; and
 
WHEREAS, up to 10,000 Madison residents will register to vote before the February 19, 2008 Presidential Primary; and
 
WHEREAS, Madison residents can quickly register to vote at the City Clerk's Office, any Madison public library, or any Madison fire station; and
 
WHEREAS, over 60 individuals have been deputized to register voters in the City of Madison; and
 
WHEREAS, the City of Madison can save taxpayer dollars by processing voter registrations before the Statewide Voter Registration System becomes overwhelmed with statewide usage, requiring City staff to work overtime to complete the registration process; and
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Madison Common Council declares November 11-17, 2007 as VOTER REGISTRATION WEEK in the City of Madison; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that eligible voters who have moved within the City of Madison be encouraged to register to vote this fall.
