The proposed resolution authorizes the application and acceptance of a federal grant to support bicycle and pedestrian safety along Park Street. The requested grant amount is up to $2 million. The grant does not have a local match requirement and City funds are not anticipated to be used for the project. If awarded, Traffic Engineering will seek to appropriate the federal dollars through an amendment to the budget or include in a future request.

WHEREAS, the City of Madison is dedicated to the safety of our community; and

WHEREAS, Traffic Engineering is committed to carrying out the City’s Vision Zero goals; and

WHEREAS, Traffic Engineering is interested in obtaining a discretionary grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the purposes of piloting a program which increases bicycle and pedestrian safety along Park Street; and

WHEREAS, the proposed technologies will support City’s priority of implementing traffic safety measures in a fair and equitable manner to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on City streets; and

WHEREAS, the grant will provide funding for costs associated with planning, design, development, field testing, and workforce development; and

WHEREAS, we will be requesting funding for up to two million dollars; and

WHEREAS, the grant application form includes legal terms, obligations, and/or commitments from the City, and/or requires a signature from a person who is authorized to bind the City to such things; and

WHEREAS, the City of Madison Traffic Engineering staff can attest to the validity and veracity of the statements and representations contained in the grant application; and
