Fiscal Note
The proposed resolution authorizes a cost sharing agreement with Dane County for Bridge Inspection Services for the 2026/2027 inspection cycle. The City share of the agreement cost is estimated at $80,000 for the two years. Funding for 2026 ($40,000) is available in the 2026 Adopted Engineering Division Operating Budget. Funding for 2027 ($40,000) will be included in the Engineering Division’s 2027 Operating Budget Request and will be contingent upon adoption of the 2027 Operating Budget by the Common Council.

Body
The City of Madison is required to inspect its bridges within the Highway Structures Information System (HSI) every two years by State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). Dane County is the manager for the bridges in the county within the HSI state program. The inspection reports inform the City for any required maintenance that should be scheduled for each bridge and eventually plan for replacement.
Prior to 2026, Dane County has administered a consultant contract to inspect all bridges for every municipality except City of Madison. Due to staffing changes, the City of Madison is proposing for the 2026/2027 inspection cycle to add the City’s bridges to the Dane County Contract.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that that the Mayor and City Clerk are hereby authorized to enter into an agreement(s) between the City of Madison and Dane County, for cost sharing on Bridge Inspection Services - 2026/2027.
