Fiscal Note

The proposed resolution authorizes the City of Madison to accept ownership of a public art sculpture. Maintenance related to the piece will be included in future Planning Division budgets. No additional City appropriation required.

Body

WHEREAS, on May 16, 2023, the City of Madison Common Council passed Resolution number RES-23-00389, Legislative File I.D. number 77466 amending Planning’s 2023 Capital Budget to appropriate $10,000 in private donations and approving a non-competitive sole-source contract with Austen Brantley to create and install a sculpture for the Darbo-Worthington-Starkweather Neighborhood and authorizing the acceptance of outside funding for the project; and,

 

WHEREAS, on June 18, 2024,the City of Madison Common Council passed Resolution number RES-24-00394, Legislative File I.D. number 83444 approving the design and location for the Darbo-Worthington Neighborhood Public Art project by Austen Brantley (District 15); and,

 

WHEREAS, Mother & Child was successfully installed at the end of the sidewalk segment in the public right-of-way adjacent to 3002 Darbo Drive Monday, June 30, 2025; and,

 

WHEREAS, Austen Brantley has submitted all necessary photos and other documentation for the project as specified in their agreement; and,

 

WHEREAS, on July 8, 2025, the piece was unveiled by Artist Austen Brantley, followed by a community celebration in conjunction with Parks Alive! at Worthington Park.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Common Council of the City of Madison accepts ownership of Mother & Child by Austen Brantley, at the end of the sidewalk segment in the public right-of-way adjacent to 3002 Darbo Drive.
