Congratulating Nature's Bakery on its 40th anniversary.
Body
WHEREAS, in 1970, Gini Lopez joined with two other women to found Nature's Own Bakery, which supplied whole wheat bread to the Whole Earth Grocery Co-op on E. Johnson Street; and
 
WHEREAS, through the 1970s, the business evolved to include a variety of specialized bakers, regular delivery routes, and sales at the Farmer's Market; and
 
WHEREAS, in 1975, the bakery was incorporated as Nature's Bakery, Ltd. and the storefront at 1019 Williamson Street was purchased; and
 
WHEREAS, in 1978, the bakery participated in the first collective bakery conference, from which the Cooperative Whole Grain Education Association grew; and
 
WHEREAS, in the 1980s, the bakery went through a series of positive changes culminating in its being re-incorporated into its present form as a workers' cooperative; and
 
WHEREAS, today, Nature's Bakery has eight owner-members, all of whom are involved in the bakery's production and in the management of one area of the business; and
 
WHEREAS, the cooperative has grown from supplying whole wheat bread to one retailer to supplying many varieties of bread, granola, cookies, vegetarian burgers and calzones to several stores; and
 
WHEREAS, they produce over 60,000 loaves of bread, 56,000 pounds of granola and 45,000 burgers a year using organic whole grains and locally grown ingredients whenever possible; and
 
WHEREAS, Nature's Bakery continues to prove itself as a successful alternative business and advocate of the whole food movement;
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council congratulate Nature's Bakery on its 40th anniversary.
