Recognizing the service of the members of the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary and proclaiming July 23, 2009, as "U.S. Coast Guard Band Day" in Madison, Wisconsin.
Body
WHEREAS, the 55-member Coast Guard Band is the official representative of the United States Coast Guard, established in 1790 as the United States' oldest continuous seagoing service; and
WHEREAS, current and former active duty and reserve members of the Coast Guard perform humanitarian service on Wisconsin's coasts, namely Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River; and
WHEREAS, volunteer members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary provide boater education and assist boaters in distress on Madison-area lakes and waterways; and
WHEREAS, the Coast Guard Band holds the Coast Guard Unit Commendation for "...devotion to duty, teamwork and outstanding performance..."; and
WHEREAS, the Coast Guard Band has played for Presidents and Congress, at formal government ceremonies and vessel commissionings and, most recently, at President Barack Obama's inauguration; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Madison wish to recognize the service performed by members of the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary; and
WHEREAS, the Madison Navy League is sponsoring a free concert by the U.S. Coast Guard Band in the Mitby Theater at Madison Area Technical College on July 23, 2009;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council proclaim July 23, 2009, as "U.S. Coast Guard Band Day" in Madison, Wisconsin.
