Title: Authorizing the Mayor and the Chief of Police to accept an additional $25,000 in funds for public information and outreach education to accompany the Beltline enforcement grant authorized in 2005.

This grant will be accounted for in a segregated fund (SG59). There is no effect on the Expenditure Restraint Program or the levy.
Title
Authorizing the Mayor and the Chief of Police to accept an additional $25,000 in funds for public information and outreach education to accompany the Beltline enforcement grant authorized in 2005.
Body
Whereas, in September of 2005 the Common Council adopted RES #05-00742 authorizing the acceptance of $50,000 in grant funds from the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation - Bureau of Transportation Safety for enforcement activities related to speeding and aggressive driving on Highways 12 and 18 (also known as the West and East Beltline) and roadways adjacent to the area; and,

Whereas, this grant now offers additional funds, up to $25,000 for Public Information and outreach education, to be used for such things as publishing materials, rental of billboards, PSAs or other media related items acceptable to WI BOTS; and,

Whereas, Traffic Safety is best approached by public education to solicit voluntary compliance combined with enforcement efforts.

Now therefore be it resolved, that the Mayor and the Chief of Police are authorized to accept these additional traffic safety funds, totaling $25,000 (SG59-54000-712000) from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation - Bureau of Transportation Safety.

Be it further resolved, that these funds be used for the creation of public information and outreach materials to spread the message of traffic safety, and to rent billboard space along City of Madison highways for this same message.

Be it further resolved, that these funds may be shared among other jurisdictions (Monona PD, Middleton PD, Town of Madison PD, Village of Cottage Grove PD and Dane County Sheriff's Office) partnering with the City of Madison Police Department for Beltline enforcement efforts to be performed in conjunction with this grant.
