SUBSTITUTE: Proclaiming August 31, 2023, as Aiden Wijeyakulasuriya Day in Madison, Wisconsin
Body
WHEREAS, Aiden Wijeyakulasuriya, who just began eighth grade last month, has attended Blessed Sacrament School in Madison for all of his grade school years; and,
WHEREAS, Aiden has previously won the Blessed Sacrament School's spelling bee competitions, which advanced him to the Madison All-City Spelling Bee; and,
WHEREAS, Aiden won the Madison All-City Spelling Bees in both 2022 and 2023, becoming the third and fourth All-City Spelling Bee winner to bring the championship trophy to Blessed Sacrament School; and,
WHEREAS, Aiden represented Madison in Wisconsin's 2023 Badger State Spelling Bee and won the very challenging contest among 49 other participants on March 11, 2023, in Madison; and,
WHEREAS, Aiden happily represented Wisconsin in the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee from May 30 to June 1, 2023, in National Harbor, Maryland, where he made it to the very competitive seventh round and tied for 21st place, an improvement on his 51st placement in the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee; and,
WHEREAS, he is the son of his proud and very supportive parents, Mr. Sameera Wijeyakulasuriya and Ms. Dinusha Wijeyakulasuriya, and the younger brother of Jayden Wijeyakulasuriya; and,
WHEREAS, Aiden is accomplished in many interests and hobbies including math, where he takes Algebra 2 at Edgewood High School, science, and reading, which he integrates into his spelling bee studies; and,
WHEREAS, in his spare time, Aiden plays the piano, excels in tennis, holds a first degree black belt in tae kwon do, and is a member of the Boy Scouts; and,
WHEREAS, while Aiden likes his mother's cooking at home, he also enjoys trying different types of restaurants throughout Madison, and further loves biking, hiking, and kayaking in the area; and,
