Fiscal Note
These grants will be accounted for in special revenue funds. Matching funds of approximately $165,000 are included in the police department's operating budget and will pay the fringe benefit costs (FICA and WRS) associated with the overtime funded by the grants. In addition, routine officer straight time enforcement efforts will also be applied to achieve the match commitment (25% of grand totals).

WHEREAS, each year the Wisconsin Department of Transportation-BOTS (WI DOT-BOTS) provides funds to local police agencies for overtime for enforcement of traffic violations and,
WHEREAS, this year WI DOT-BOTS has offered a total of $630,000 specifically to reduce the number of impaired motorists on City of Madison roadways and contribute to decreasing the number of deaths and/or injuries due to crashes, and enable safer conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists by deploying officers for enhanced enforcement.
WHEREAS, a maximum of $4,999 will be spent from the Speed Enforcement Grant for the purchase of speed board equipment and,
WHEREAS, the WI DOT-BOTS has provided this funding to the City of Madison for the past several years and,
WHEREAS, the grant funds enable the Police Department’s Traffic and Support Section to coordinate additional traffic enforcement activities and purchase equipment that would otherwise not be provided,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Chief of Police are authorized to accept the traffic safety grants totaling $630,000 from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Safety.
