Title
Board of Health for Madison and Dane County Resolution #2025-10 Authorization to Accept Funds from Animal Owners who Redeem Their Animals from Dane County Humane Society
Body
Public Health Madison and Dane County (Public Health) proposes the acceptance of up to $147,250 from Animal Owners who redeem their animals from the Dane County Humane Society.
Stray and abandoned animals found in Dane County are brought to the Dane County Humane Society for shelter and care by Public Health Humane Officers, local law enforcement, and the public. Public Health pays for this service under contract with the Humane Society, a minimum of $250 per animal.
Public Health proposes to invoice animal owners that redeem their animal that are taken to the shelter to recoup the amount that is paid to care for their animal. In 2024, a total of 186 cats and 403 dogs were redeemed by their owners after being taken to the Humane Society. If a similar number of animals are redeemed from the Humane Society in 2025 and Public Health is able to recoup $250 for each animal, Public Health would recoup $147,250. This resolution would permit Public Health to accept funds paid by animal owners and apply these funds to the continued shelter and care of animals in need in the community.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Health for Madison and Dane County on behalf of Public Health Madison & Dane County authorizes the Director of Public Health, or their designee, to accept and expend the funding, and amend the 2025 Public Health Budget by up to $147,250.
