Commending, honoring and expressing thanks and appreciation to George Carran, Zoning Administrator, upon his retirement from City service.

WHEREAS, George Carran is retiring on January 5, 2005 after 35 ½ years of service to the City of Madison.  George began his career as a Planning Aide on May 5, 1969 in the Planning Department.  He transferred to the Building Inspection Unit and became Assistant Zoning Administrator on January 21, 1974 and was promoted to Zoning Administrator on September 9, 1984.
 
WHEREAS, George's accomplishments include being the first Planner on the Madison Bicycle Trail System, staff to the Zoning Board of Appeals, and secretary for the Zoning Text Amendment Staff Team.  George has been a member of the MATC Real Estate Advisory Board and an instructor at MATC Real Estate Department on Zoning.  George also is a member of the Board of Directors for the City of Madison Credit Union.  
 
WHEREAS, George will be missed for his vast knowledge of the Zoning Code, the location of every street in the City of Madison, and his ability to negotiate through difficult zoning issues and all this with a good sense of humor.  His knowledge also stretches to make him a top contender in any challenge to name the singer, song and year of tunes from the 50's and 60's, and also an expert on make, model and year of cars.  He is also known to be a devoted member on the Noon-Hour Euchre Team.
 
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council commend, honor and express thanks and appreciation to George Carran for his 35 ½ years of service to the City of Madison and express sincere appreciation for his dedication to his work and that the Mayor and Common Council join all City employees in wishing George, and his wife Annette, happiness and good fortune in the future.
