PREAMBLE
That the Engineering Division deems it essential to beautify the Packers/Aberg area to continue the boulevard improvements begun in this 'gateway to the city' with the reconstruction of Aberg Ave. and added to with shade and ornamental tree planting in 2004. The area being proposed is too narrow to support trees and provides an opportunity to add some color through the use of perennials as has been typical in the East Washington Ave. reconstruction and neighborhood traffic calming projects city-wide. Horticulture staff from Olbrich gardens were enlisted to prepare a planting plan that would tolerate the extreme conditions of this median.
Approximately 100-feet north and 400-feet south of the Aberg Avenue Bridge Median will be planted with native forbs (wildflowers) and grasses which are conducive to the harsh conditions of this thoroughfare. In addition, vines will be added along the fence on the east and west side of the Packers Avenue right-of-way from Aberg Avenue south to almost Commercial Avenue.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Madison has authorized the expenditure of $25,000 with Herman Landscape Service for planting 500-feet of Packers Avenue Median.
