Fiscal Note
Funding for cellular services is included in individual City agency budgets. The Police Department's 2005 operating budget and 2006 Executive operating budget include sufficient funding for their portion of this contract, and sufficient funding will be requested for the 2007 budget. Expenditures by other City agencies would be from budgeted funds or by separate authorization if needed.

To authorize the Mayor and City Clerk to enter into a 1-year contract on behalf of the City with Sprint Solutions, Inc., d/b/a Sprint, formerly doing business as Nextel Communications, for wireless phone equipment and related services, for the police department and other departments requiring such service.
Body
WHEREAS, the police department requires access to wireless telephone communications; and
WHEREAS, during an emergency or event which disables regular cellular services (during heavy usage of cellular phones due to major disaster, large gatherings or large newsworthy events) or a situation where regular police radio communication is disabled, the police department requires the ability to communicate in order to provide police services; and
WHEREAS, Sprint (formerly Nextel) currently provides cellular phones that also operate as a digital walkie-talkie, on a separate data network from cellular communications, this walkie-talkie feature is operational when cell phones are jammed, and these phones will also function as short-distance walkie-talkies even when all cellular services are unavailable; and
WHEREAS, the police department requires the ability to have its walkie-talkie communications given priority over general public use in an emergency, and the ability to pre-empt public use in the event of an extreme disaster, and Sprint provides such ability;
WHEREAS, other competitively priced vendors do not currently offer all of these capabilities; and
