Commending and expressing appreciation to Tom Walsh for his years of service with the City Transportation Department.
Body
WHEREAS, Tom Walsh retired on January 26, 2007, after having been employed with the City Transportation Department since December 4, 1973, a period of more than 33 years; and

WHEREAS, he was always sensitive to the transportation needs of pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists while also being sensitive to taxpayers; and

WHEREAS, as the head of Traffic Engineering's Operations and Safety section and as the City's Highway Safety Coordinator he supervised the installation and modification of most of the City's traffic signs, pavement markings and bike paths; and

WHEREAS, Tom had the courage and conviction to say no to requests when he knew they would not improve community safety and would likely waste limited City resources; and

WHEREAS, Tom had the opportunity to work with a large part of the community in many other efforts, such as the Institute of Transportation Engineers, "Pro-Walk Pro-Bike," and the Safe Community Coalition where he was a charter member; and

WHEREAS, Tom is recognized in his field as a pedestrian-bicycle advocate, expert witness, school safety expert, and traffic safety specialist; and

WHEREAS, his fellow employees recognize him as a dedicated public servant and friend and wish him a long, healthy and productive retirement;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council on their own behalf and that of the citizens of Madison hereby recognize and commend Tom Walsh for his loyal and dedicated service.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be suitably printed and forwarded to Tom Walsh as an expression of gratitude.
