Title

Board of Health for Madison and Dane County Resolution #2024-25 Authorization to Accept Additional Funds from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services for the WIC Program

Body

Public Health Madison and Dane County (Public Health) proposes the acceptance of an additional $32,200 from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Breastfeeding Peer Counseling program. This program supports new breastfeeding moms with peer-peer support in their journey. This position was created to increase breastfeeding rates among marginalized populations with historically low breastfeeding rates. In Dane County, this burden falls on non-white participants. The funding from DHS is directly linked to caseload. This funding increase reflects Dane County’s increased caseload among breastfeeding mothers. With the acceptance of these funds, we will hire one additional LTE Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, bringing our total number of Breastfeeding Peer Counselors to four.

The Board of Health for Madison and Dane County previously approved Resolution #2023-36 authorizing the acceptance of $96,400 from DHS for the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counseling grant. PHMDC received an additional $32,200 from DHS, increasing the total amount to $128,640.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Health for Madison and Dane County on behalf of Public Health Madison and Dane County authorizes the Director of Public Health, or their designee, to sign the agreement, accept and expend the funding, and amend the 2024 Public Health Budget by $32,200.
