Title
Urging the University of Wisconsin-Madison to reconsider its decision to contract out food service operations at the Wisconsin Institute of Discovery and to hire Union workers instead.
Body
WHEREAS, AFSCME Local 171 represents 1600 blue collar, technical and security workers at UW-Madison; and
WHEREAS, Local 171 members provide quality services made possible only by a stable workforce earning a living wage and represented by a Union; and
WHEREAS, the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery will open on the UW-Madison campus in December, and plans are to contract out food service operations at this facility, work which would usually be performed by members of AFSCME Local 171; and
WHEREAS, Union jobs at UW-Madison help support a strong economy in our community, and contracting out work that could be done by UW employees undermines wage standards in the industry; and
WHEREAS, as a state entity, the University receives significant funding from Wisconsin taxpayers, and government must ensure that those who work for or provide services to its facilities are treated fairly, including the right to collectively bargain and earn a living wage;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Common Council urges the University of Wisconsin-Madison to reconsider its decision to contract out food service operations at the Wisconsin Institute of Discovery and to hire Union workers instead.
