Whereas, Madison Water Utility is hosting an Open House on Saturday, May 10 for Drinking Water Week highlighting the vital role water plays in our daily lives; and
Whereas, Madison is fortunate to have a safe, reliable water system; and
Whereas, worldwide over one billion people have no access to clean and safe drinking water; and
Whereas, Wisconsin Water for the World (www.wisconsinwaterfortheworld.org) brings together engineers, teachers and water professionals from around the state to build sustainable drinking water systems in remote Guatemalan villages; and
Whereas, Wisconsin Water for the World volunteers donate their time, expertise, and travel expenses, so all contributions to the charity go toward the actual building of drinking water systems, operations training, sanitation, and health and hygiene education for the communities served; and
Whereas, Madison Water Utility would like to bring awareness and raise money for Wisconsin Water for the World as part of the Open House by having a silent auction and coffee & chocolate tasting that features fair trade Guatemalan coffees, chocolates, and other goods donated by local businesses;
Now, therefore, be it resolved, that pursuant to MGO 3.35(5)(b) the Common Council authorizes the use of Madison Water Utility building at 119 East Olin Ave. as the site of a fundraiser for Wisconsin Water for the World, and authorizes Madison Water Utility staff to raise money on the charity's behalf as part of the Drinking Water Week Open House Saturday, May 10.
