The proposed resolution authorizes accepting a donated plaque and installation funding from the University of Wisconsin - Madison for a plaque commemorating Elroy “Crazylegs” Hirsch. The 2019 Adopted Operating Budget will amended to accept donated funds up to $10,000 for the installation. No additional City appropriation is required.

WHEREAS, Monroe Street, including the area bounded by Monroe Street, Regent Street, and Breese Terrace (“the Project”), underwent reconstruction by the City and was completed in November, 2018; and
WHEREAS, the Project included the permanent removal of the former “Crazylegs Lane” (a 190 foot long street that had connected Oakland Avenue with the Regent Street/Breese Terrace intersection), which had been named to commemorate the contributions of Elroy “Crazylegs” Hirsch to the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and
WHEREAS, the City desires to continue the commemoration of Mr. Hirsch, though the street named in his honor was removed; and
WHEREAS, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has suggested a 16 inch by 22 inch freestanding commemorative plaque, to include a picture of Mr. Hirsch and historical description of his role with the University, as a way to continue the commemoration of Mr. Hirsch; and
