Authorizing the Mayor and Chief of Police to accept a grant award from the U.S. Dept. of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, in the amount of $125,170 for a grant award to be used by the Madison Metropolitan School District to purchase security equipment to enhance school safety.
Body
WHEREAS, the Madison Police Department (MPD) has long history of working in conjunction with the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) to enhance school safety; and,
WHEREAS, these collaborative efforts include the highly successful Educational Resource Officer (ERO) program; and,
WHEREAS, problem-solving strategies have highlighted improvements that could enhance the safety of four high schools and five middle schools within the school district; and,
WHEREAS, the goal of these strategies is to provide early identification of problems, efficient utilization of limited resources, and a coordinated response by police personnel and school staff to issues of school safety; and,
WHEREAS, these improvements include the use of increased electronic surveillance in order to improve the ability of police and school staff to identify problem locations, analyze behavior and allocate resources more effectively; and,
WHEREAS, electronic surveillance has been used effectively around the nation to reduce bullying and gang activity; and,
WHEREAS, these improvements also include provision of secure entry systems that will limit middle school access to authorized persons; and,
WHEREAS, this grant will also provide two-way radios to allow staff greater communication ability, laptop computers which will allow the ERO’s to access school security systems in order to plan and execute appropriate responses, and portable breath testers to provide timely assessment of alcohol involvement; and,
