Title

AMENDED - Establishing the Ad Hoc Redistricting Committee to recommend new Ward and Aldermanic District boundaries.

Body

WHEREAS every ten years the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a census of the population within the City of Madison; and

 

WHEREAS these changes require that Madison’s Aldermanic District boundaries be evaluated and changed to equalize the number of residents living within each Aldermanic District.

 

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that a special Committee be created which will be charged with recommending new Ward and Aldermanic District boundaries.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Committee be comprised of:

Four (4) Alderpersons that are racially/ethnically diverse and represent different geographic areas of the City, and

Three (3) City of Madison residents that are racially/ethnically diverse and represent different geographic areas of the City.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all members of the Committee shall be appointed by the Mayor in consultation with Common Council leadership and confirmed by the Common Council. Alderpersons shall be appointed by the Mayor from a list of nominees from the Council President, prepared after consultation with the Common Council Executive Committee. following the April 6, 2021 election.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Planning Division shall provide staff to the Committee.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Committee shall review and update the written criteria utilized in the 2011 redistricting process to guide drafting new aldermanic districts.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Committee report back to the Common Council with recommended Ward and Aldermanic District boundaries.

 

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Committee shall be dissolved when the Common Council enacts the aldermanic redistricting ordinance.
